Leroy (Askia)'s Story
I left John Jay in January 1968 and entered Brooklyn College. At Brooklyn I became the leader of the Brooklyn League of African American Collegians and we worked together with the students of the Puerto Rican Alliance to fight for Open Admissions throughout City University. For my efforts I was arrested along with 18 other Black and Puerto Rican Students on May 13, 1969. I faced possible sentencing of 228 years until Congresswoman Shirley Chisolm, ministers, students and faculty came to our rescue.
